Temples beyond Angkor. There’s so much more to the temples of Angkor beyond Angkor Wat. Get yourself a 3 day pass and explore. War Museum offers visitors a unique and insightful view of the perils that Cambodia faced during the last 3 decades of the 20th century. It gives visitors an excellent opportunity to learn more about what actually occurred during Cambodia’s ‘war years’. Website and Google Map. Most of the stalls here are the social enterprise arm of a local NGO, including some we connect with as part of our Social Cycles tour. Get away from the tourists and go where the locals go. Great to see a market with no souvenirs and filled with locals only. Good place to buy some clothes that don’t say Siem Reap. Google Map. Google Map and website. Old Market. Smack bang in the town centre, it’s hard to miss. Don’t just walk around it, get stuck into the fresh food side of Cambodia amidst the hustle and bustle. Designed for locals, but selling to tourists, there’s nothing you can’t buy here. Bring your camera! Google Map link. A lot of children selling items or begging will tell you they need the money to go to school. The reality is that the money received keeps the kids from going to school. Read more about this sad and unfortunate scam here. Visiting an orphanage. Orphanages are not tourist attractions. Donations can actually increase the amount of orphans in Cambodia, not help them. Read more about the issue here, and learn more about better ways to help here. Short term volunteering. Unless you have a unique specialized skill, short term volunteering rarely has a positive impact, and can often have a negative impact. We’d recommend a minimum of 3 months to volunteer and only to train local adults in your speciality. Read more here. Riding an elephant. We’d recommend against it. In order to tame a wild elephant to allow tourists to ride on it, it must go through a cruel and aggressive process as a baby. The Asian elephant is actually endangered in the wild. Riding elephants only hurts them.
