Cycling across Iran, in your own words
Want to know what it’s like to travel in Iran by bike? Hear it from one of our most recent travellers, Andrew.
I travelled to Iran last year to do the Social Cycles tour and had an absolute blast! It was such a brilliant introduction to a truly incredible country. Brett and the team put in a huge effort to ensure that the group got the most out of the experience. They were so friendly and operated in a very professional way. Brett’s communication prior to setting off for the tour was exceptional and he was always there to field any questions during the planning stages.
This is not your typical tour. The SC team make it a much more intimate trip where you are guaranteed to understand the country at a much deeper level as well as physically challenging yourself. You will cycle through beautiful countryside, tiny villages, impressive mountains and meet some of the warmest people on the planet. The local people are so kind, generous and hospitable – I still keep in touch with Iranian friends that we met on that trip. Everyday we were continually surprised with the warm interactions we had with the locals across the country. Of course the social aspect of the SC tours really enhances this too. It’s not just about the cycling, we were introduced to some incredibly hard working NGOs which gave us a real insight into some of the issues and challenges in the communities.
I did this tour with my partner and we were the youngest ones in the group which didn’t matter in the slightest as we thoroughly enjoyed the company of the other people on the tour as well as Brett and the local crew. She was nervous about the amount of cycling each day as she is not a strong cyclist. Once we set off we realised this was not an issue as Brett and the group were relaxed and the stronger cyclists were free to go ahead in parts. On the rare occasion she did jump in the following support van when she really needed a break, this was quick and easy. The tour was not a race – it was much more about pushing yourself, soaking in the stunning scenery and meeting the lovely locals. It really is an experience suitable for young or old and cyclists of varying abilities. In fact I strongly recommended the tour to my parents when I returned.
If you are thinking about doing a tour with Social Cycles then take the leap and go for it, you certainly won’t regret it! What a fulfilling way to travel and see a country in a completely different way.
